Why Hummingbird Haven?

We chose this name for a specific reason… Both the Hummingbird and the Veteran have known the harshness of life’s challenges, but it is in their response to these trials that their true similarity emerges.

The Hummingbird, faced with adverse conditions, migrates thousands of miles in search of better sustenance and climate. It finds a way to thrive amidst change, an exemplar of adaptability and resourcefulness. If can move forward, backwards, or hover in place in order to respond to environmental changes or challenges.

Similarly, the Veteran navigates the battlefield of life with a sense of purpose, finding ways to cope with the aftermath of conflict and the challenges of returning to civilian life. The resilience of the Veteran lies in the ability to seek support, find strength in camaraderie, and adapt to the changing circumstances that follow the end of their military service.

PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by a terrifying event — experiencing or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, separating from loved ones, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

Most people who go through traumatic events may have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping, but can get better with time and self-care. If symptoms worsen, last for months or years, and interfere with your day-to-day functioning, you may have PTSD.

Effective treatment after PTSD symptoms can be critical to reduce symptoms and optimize your well-being.

STSD

Known as compassion fatigue, second-hand PTSD, and secondary traumatic stress disorder, refers to a form of distress or trauma experienced indirectly by hearing details of or witnessing the aftermath of a traumatic experience by another person. Service providers often exhibit symptoms of PTSD without having experienced trauma first-hand.

Vicarious trauma is the change process resulting from frequent exposure to or engagement with trauma survivors. A person who interacts with survivors of traumatic experiences – such as doctors or first responders – may experience a significant change in their morals and beliefs because of listening to trauma survivors’ stories.

Empowering Resilience

In the face of adversity, resilience stands tall. At Hummingbird Haven, we envision a world where veterans and their families are empowered with the strength and resources to maneuver through any situation. We understand the weight of the struggle; hundreds of thousands of our brave troops are diagnosed with PTSD, and millions of American families are experiencing the ripple effects of Secondary Trauma. But with struggle comes the opportunity for transformation. We see a future where these challenges are not roadblocks but stepping stones to a stronger, more resilient you. Your journey towards resilience begins with a single step, and Hummingbird Haven is here to walk alongside you every step of the way.

We can help you manage and overcome the following symptoms of PTSD or STSD

Reliving Trauma:

Both PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and STSD (Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder) can cause recurring nightmares or flashbacks, a re-experience of the traumatic events.

Avoidance and Isolation:

You may avoid people, places, thoughts, or situations that may remind them of the trauma. This can lead to a sense of isolation and withdrawal from loved ones.

Hyperarousal:

This symptom includes being easily startled, feeling tense, or having difficulty sleeping. The individual may be constantly on the lookout for threats.

Negative Thoughts and Feelings:

This can manifest as feelings of guilt, blame, a decrease in interest in previously enjoyable activities, and difficulty experiencing positive emotions.

Strain on Relationships:

These conditions can place significant strain on personal relationships. Loved ones may feel helpless, frustrated, or neglected, leading to relationship difficulties and marital problems.

Work Problems:

Difficulty in concentrating and other PTSD symptoms can affect job performance and professional relationships, often leading to job loss or career changes.
